Welcome to "premi world"

The First Look. When I first walked into the special baby care unit the first thing you have to do is wash your hands. Normal soap and then an alcohol based wash. Once I rang the bell I had to wait in a room reserved for parents and relatives. Then I was called through to a room full of monitors pipes cables and wires. And then in plastic incubators are the premature babies. I could not really see much of Kirsty at first I was gob smacked at all that was happening. It was explained to me what was going on and this is the first picture of Kirsty. The tube in her mouth is making her breathe although she was doing quite a few breathes on her own. One thing you soon learn monitors keep going off every time a baby moves. So you get used to it a bit but all the bleeps can be alarming but you get used to it. |

Bubble Wrap. I do not know how they discovered this but they used bubble wrap to keep Kirsty warm! Apparently unlike normal blankets it does not take the moisture away from the skin. And as the skin is immature it is important to keep it moist. No popping it though as premature babies cannot stand too many senses at once. Whilst I was hoping to touch her, it was not allowed for too long.

| Lisa not being in the same room
as Kirsty did not seem at all right. She had gone through all the pain
the weeks in hospital. She was laying in the high independence unit
whilst Kirsty was here.
I was literally torn between two people who were once so close. I felt guilty if I was seeing Lisa and guilty if I was seeing Kirsty. The whole affair got to me so much that in the mornings I just felt like crying. Do I get close to this little bundle? |
